The Best Day Trips From Medina County: Great Getaways Within Easy Reach
One of the things I love about living in Medina County is that you don't have to travel far to feel like you've actually gotten away.
You can spend the morning hiking past a waterfall, have lunch in a charming downtown, kayak across a quiet lake, or head south for a full day of outdoor adventure—and still sleep in your own bed that night.
For people considering moving to Medina County, Ohio, this is an advantage that's easy to overlook when you're comparing homes, school districts, taxes, and commute times. Location isn't just about how quickly you can get to work. It's also about what you can do when you're not working.
Here are some of my favorite easy day trips from Medina County—and a few things to know before choosing where to go.

*Drive times vary considerably depending on where you live in Medina County, traffic, construction, and your exact destination.
My advice: Don't judge Medina County's location solely by its distance from Cleveland. Look at a map in every direction. That's when you realize how many different experiences are within roughly an hour of home.
CUYAHOGA VALLEY NATIONAL PARK
Cuyahoga Valley National Park is one of Northeast Ohio's biggest lifestyle advantages—and Medina County residents can enjoy it without planning an overnight trip.
The park covers more than 33,000 acres between Cleveland and Akron and offers hiking, waterfalls, forests, historic sites, biking and the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad.
Brandywine Falls is probably its best-known attraction, with a roughly 60-foot waterfall and boardwalk viewpoints. If you'd rather hike, the Ledges area provides wooded trails, rock formations and overlooks.
Another bonus: there is no entrance fee to Cuyahoga Valley National Park.

My advice: Go early on weekends, especially during peak fall color. If you're relocating to Northeast Ohio, visit the park in both summer and fall—you'll quickly understand why access to outdoor recreation is such a big part of living here.
HINCKLEY RESERVATION & HINCKLEY LAKE
For Medina County residents, Hinckley is one of the easiest options when you want to get outside without committing an entire day.
Part of Cleveland Metroparks, the Hinckley area offers wooded trails, lake views, picnic areas and plenty of opportunities to slow down.
One particularly interesting stop is Worden's Ledges, where you'll find carvings in the sandstone along a wooded trail.

You want a full tourist-style downtown
You want lots of indoor activities
You're looking for extensive shopping

My advice: Hinckley is also worth considering from a real estate perspective. Buyers who want more space and a rural/suburban atmosphere while remaining convenient to Medina, Strongsville and Northeast Ohio amenities often put the Hinckley area on their radar.
CHAGRIN FALLS
Want a getaway that doesn't revolve around hiking boots?
Head to Chagrin Falls.
The village combines one of Northeast Ohio's prettiest downtown settings with a waterfall located right in the center of town. Walk around, grab lunch or dinner, browse local shops and stop to see the falls.
It's especially good for a relaxed date day or when visitors are in town.
Best combination: waterfall + downtown walk + lunch + local shopping.
The tradeoff is drive time. From western portions of Medina County, you're crossing a good portion of Greater Cleveland, so traffic can make the trip considerably longer.
My advice: Make this a weekday or Saturday-morning trip when possible. And don't underestimate these small downtowns when researching Northeast Ohio. Communities like Medina and Chagrin Falls illustrate why many buyers moving here are surprised by how much character exists outside downtown Cleveland.
MOHICAN STATE PARK & LOUDONVILLE
When you want your day trip to feel more like an actual getaway, head south toward Mohican.
The Mohican area is known for hiking, wooded scenery, river activities and canoeing. It's particularly popular during warmer months and fall.

Families and groups
Fall scenery
Consider:
Longer drive
Seasonal crowds
Weather matters more
Plan activities ahead
Peak weekends get busy
My advice: Leave early and make a full day of it. If canoeing or another activity is the centerpiece of your trip, verify current hours, water conditions and reservations before leaving Medina.
DON'T FORGET CLEVELAND AND LAKE ERIE
Sometimes we forget that Cleveland itself can be a day trip.
Depending on where you live in Medina County, you can head north for museums, a Guardians game, restaurants, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, West Side Market or the Lake Erie shoreline.
You can also build a summer day around communities farther west along the lake.
This creates one of my favorite things about Medina County: you can have space and a smaller-community lifestyle without giving up access to a major metropolitan area.
My advice: If you're house hunting, don't only test-drive your work commute. Pick a Saturday and drive from a neighborhood you're considering to the places you'll actually use—parks, golf courses, restaurants, shopping, downtown Cleveland and Lake Erie. That tells you far more about what everyday life will feel like.

Here's another consideration people don't always think about: where you live within Medina County changes what's convenient.
Northern Medina County communities such as Brunswick and Hinckley provide particularly convenient access toward Cleveland and Cuyahoga County, while Medina offers a central location with its own historic downtown. Communities farther south and west can make rural recreation and destinations toward Wayne and Ashland counties easier to reach.
That's why I always encourage buyers to think beyond the house itself.

Cuyahoga Valley National Park, Hinckley, Chagrin Falls and Mohican are only the beginning.
One weekend can mean waterfalls and hiking. The next can mean Cleveland restaurants and a ballgame. Another can be kayaking, golf, exploring a small downtown or heading toward Lake Erie.
That's part of what makes living in Medina County so appealing: you can enjoy the breathing room and community feel of Medina County while keeping much of Northeast Ohio within easy reach.
