What we'd do: Visit the Square first, then walk or drive beyond it. Some of the businesses that tell you the most about Medina aren't directly on Public Square.

Explore Medina's West Side

One of the biggest mistakes visitors make is assuming everything interesting happens around the Square.

Medina's own tourism organizations specifically highlight the near west side, where you'll find restaurants, entertainment and long-established local businesses including Root Candles.

Root Candles

The Root family has a history in Medina extending back more than 150 years, and its flagship store at 623 W. Liberty Street remains one of those places people who live here sometimes take for granted.

Even if candles aren't normally your thing, it's worth visiting because the company is part of Medina's business history.

Foundry Social + High Voltage Karting

For something completely different, head to The Foundry.

The building dates to 1871 and once housed industrial manufacturing operations. Today, the massive historic complex has been repurposed into entertainment including Foundry Social and High Voltage Karting.

Foundry Social includes duckpin bowling, arcade games, billiards, ping pong and bocce, while High Voltage offers indoor kart racing.

Eat Where the Story Is as Good as the Food

Sérénité Restaurant & Culinary Institute

Sérénité is one of Medina's most meaningful dining experiences.

Located at 538 W. Liberty Street, Sérénité is a nonprofit restaurant and culinary institute working with the Recovery Center of Medina County. Participants receive paid culinary and hospitality training while gaining access to recovery programming and support services.

In other words, your dinner supports something much larger than dinner.

The Corkscrew Saloon

Continue west along Liberty Street and you'll find another Medina favorite: The Corkscrew Saloon.

It's a great choice when you want quality dining without necessarily heading back into the busiest part of downtown. The restaurant emphasizes carefully sourced ingredients, including products from local farms and fresh seafood.

The Farmer's Table is another worthy stop. Located inside Medina's historic Farmer's Exchange building, it serves handcrafted local fare and Ohio draft beer.

Our suggestion: Don't judge Medina's food scene solely by the restaurants immediately surrounding Public Square. Liberty Street and the west side significantly expand your options.

Escape Into Medina County's Quieter Parks

One of Medina County's biggest lifestyle advantages is how quickly "suburban" can turn into "where did everybody go?"

Letha House Park

Letha House Park in Chatham Township covers more than 203 acres with forest, meadow and wetland environments, plus a seven-acre lake. Trails range from a half-mile paved accessible trail to moderate nature and bridle trails.

There's another surprise: the park's darker skies make it home to an observatory operated by the Cuyahoga Astronomical Association, with public viewing programs offered periodically.

Butterfly enthusiasts should also know that Letha House is one of the sites used for long-term Ohio butterfly monitoring.

Princess Ledges Nature Preserve

Want something closer with a completely different feel?

Princess Ledges in Brunswick Hills features sandstone ledges stretching more than 1,100 feet through mature forest. The preserve is particularly good for spring wildflowers, warbler watching and photography; winter brings dramatic ice formations along the rock.

Worden's Ledges

In nearby Hinckley, Worden's Ledges combines hiking with a wonderfully strange piece of local history: carvings made during the 1940s by Noble Stuart, including figures etched into the rock.
